Sarah's daughter

Rose Hibbard, a fourteen-year-old girl in late nineteenth-century New England, takes over running the household, including the care of her younger brother and sister, after her mother is killed in a freak accident and her father turns to alcohol for comfort, and although she carries a heavy burden, Rose is able to manage until her father tells her she has to quit school.
