A novel set in a small town in New York centering on the lives of a family that is down on its luck. Onetime high school star athlete Dallas Younger now spends his time gambling and drinking, while his ex-wife Anne battles with her mother over the care of her sick father. Meanwhile, their son, Randall, neglects his school work in the belief that it doesn't pay in his small town.
