Alice Grace Ripley, let go from her library job because of the Great Depression and dumped by her boyfriend who accuses her of living in a dream world, takes the chance to escape the gossips by traveling to Acorn, Kentucky, to deliver five boxes of donated books, and finds the adventure and romance she had previouly only read about.
