Henry McAllan's wife, Laura, has a hard time adjusting when she moves from the city to a Mississippi farm in 1946. Soon, two brothers-in-arms arrive home from fighting in World War II: Jamie McAllan is charming, handsome, and sensitive to Laura's situation, and Ronsel Jackson, eldest son of the black sharecroppers who live on the McAllan farm, tries his best to endure the bigotry he receives now that he is back home.
