In 1935 London eleven-year-old Dominic is confused about his family's troubles and stops speaking. Then he spends the summer on the coast with his Uncle Roo and becomes friends with a one-legged Gypsy girl. When the summer holiday is threatened by an uprising against a band of Travelers, Dominic finds his voice and speaks against injustice.
