The bear and the nightingale

Vasilisa was brought up at the edge of the Russian wilderness on the fairy tales of her nurse, loving none more than the one about Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon who snatches away unwary souls. When her new stepmother forbids worshiping the household spirits in favor of her religion, Vasilisa begins noticing the crops are failing and evil-looking creatures are creeping in from the forest. Seeing the danger, Vasilisa is forced to draw on a gift she has kept secret, to protect her family from a threat from her nurse's fairy tales.
