Faolan, sent on a mission by King Bridei to locate the cleric Colmcille, takes the opportunity to notify his fallen comrade Deord's family of the man's death, and his work for the king must be put on hold when he arrives to find Deord's indigent sixteen-year-old daughter and her infant, and decides to bring them to the safety of Bridei's court.
