High school senior Jim Glass falls in love with his classmate Chrissie Steppe in Aliceville, North Carolina, in 1941, but their relationship is complicated by the fact that she is reluctantly committed to Bucky Bucklaw, who has gone off to join the Navy, and the fact that her Cherokee family is beholden to their landlords, the Bucklaws.
